Ok, so you do cheat a little by using a stuffing mix for this recipe - but if you want it to be very easy, this is the way to go! You can always supplement with some fresh herbs like sage or rosemary if you happen to have them on hand.

- Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Butter or spray one 2L casserole dish.
- Prepare stuffing according to directions on packet; place stuffing in a large bowl.
- Add the dried bread, eggs and water; mix well and place in casserole dish.
- Cover and bake 45 to 60 minutes.

How to Make Homemade Stuffing
For this recipe, we use fresh white bread and fresh herbs. It’s different because you don’t need to let the bread sit overnight. Just cube white bread while it’s fresh and toss it in a mixing bowl.

Traditional Stuffing Recipe Ingredients
- Fresh White Bread
- Melted Butter
- Yellow Onion
- Salt and Pepper
- Cube 10 cups fresh white bread and place in a mixing bowl.
- Add the butter in a large skillet over medium heat and let it start to melt.
- Then saute the onions and chopped celery in the butter until soft.
- Add in fresh parsley and continue to saute.
- Add in the dried thyme, sage and salt, and pepper.
- Pour over cubed bread and mix in the eggs.
- Pour the mixture into a baking dish and cover it with tinfoil.
- Bake for 30 minutes in a 350-degree oven, covered.
- Uncover and bake for another 15 minutes until the top is browned.

- To make sausage stuffing, add in 1lb sausage, casing removed, and saute with the butter, onions, and herbs.

After sauteing the colorful veggies, berries and herbs and infusing all those flavors together, it's time to add in chicken stock and the stuffing.
I used pre-packaged unflavored white and wheat bread cubes to save time. And although I do like making my own chicken stock, I used store bought since I didn't have any in my freezer--and that is perfectly fine to do when you're trying to make easy turkey stuffing recipes.
The whole point is to keep it easy, right?
Stir all the ingredients together and allow the bread to soak up the liquid.
How to make chestnut stuffing
- Preheat the oven to 350.
- Cut bread into bite-sized cubes.
- Crush the crackers.
- Melt butter in a medium skillet.
Add onion and garlic, sauté until translucent, about 3 minutes.
- Toss bread cubes and crackers in a 9x13 baking dish and mix well.
- Pour eggs, chestnuts, and onion mixture over top. Mix well.
Add just enough milk so that the bread is moisten but not wet. (*You may not need a full cup do not use too much or your finished stuffing will be soggy.)
- Cover with foil and bake for one hour or until golden brown on top. If the top doesn't get crispy, you can remove the foil and bake it for 10-15 minutes uncovered.
A Warning - Cooking with Chestnuts
Chestnuts are tricky, especially if you've never used them before. You must not wait until Thanksgiving morning to shell them. Do it a day or two before you need them it takes a good bit of time. You'll throw your whole Thanksgiving cooking plan off if you wait til the last minute.
